Abstract
Purpose: To investigate the relation of diet and supplement intake with the risk of early age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in Koreans.

Methods: The medical records of 245 patients who visited healthcare center were retrospectively reviewed. Fundus photographs were taken in all patients. Serum levels of vitamin D, total cholesterol, triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and questionnaire about smoking and alcohol consumption status, diet and supplement intake were collected.

Results: Twenty-five early AMD patients who were confirmed by fundus photography were compared with 220 patients without AMD. Body mass index, serum cholesterol level, serum vitamin D level, smoking and alcohol consumption were not associated with the risk of early AMD. Low sodium intake was associated with the risk of early AMD (OR = 4.295, CI 1.427-12.927). Other diet and supplement intake were not associated with the risk of AMD.

Conclusions: Low sodium intake increased the risk of early AMD. Other diet or supplement intake was not associated with early AMD.
